(from 2005)
I am so screwed. If you remember, a couple of weeks ago Cassandre asked me if the tooth fairy was real. Not having received a clear answer from me, she decided to do a test.
Yesterday her front tooth fell out at school. She put it in her pocket and vowed to keep it a secret from me. She refused to smile and hardly opened her mouth all evening. Even if my mom hadn't called me and spilled the beans, her actions were mighty suspicious.
That night she secretly placed the tooth under her pillow to see what would happen.
I was so conflicted. I know that if she discovers that I'm the tooth fairy she's going to be mad that I lied to her, and maybe she will even trust me a little less. On the other hand, there are so few things to believe in, to take away the tooth fairy (and then what, Santa Claus?) seems wrong too. Isn't that part of the fun of being a kid? Being able to believe in fairies?
Well, I think so. And so in the middle of the night I took the tooth and left her five dollars. (I know, $5. When I lost my teeth the tooth fairy was still bringing coins.) I have to say, I'm supposed to treasure this little pearl of a tooth, but honestly, it's a little creepy to be holding on to it. But of course I will hold on to it. That's my job.
When she woke up she was really happy to find the money. She shouted her triumph and surprised me with her big gaping smile.
